What is imagination?

Exploring out imagination is an interesting area of neuroscience. Our imagination can be so powerful, that it can fuel our creativity, our unconscious thoughts and daydreams, as well as alter our reality!

You may have heard about visual imagination, or your 'mind's eye'. Neuroscience is only just beginning to understand how and why humans visualise, but the concensus is that there is very wide range of experiences. Some people are able to visualise thoughts in great detail, creating a 'movie' in their minds - this is known as hyperphantasia. Other people do not create visual imagery at all, but instead recall knowledge or use memories instead - know as aphantasia. Others lie somewhere between these, perhaps visualising everything in great detail but without colour, or seeing shadows of objects. These experiences of hyperphantasia and aphantasia are really interesting, and affect the way we experience the world.
